To the Millsaps Family,
Serving Millsaps College this year as the acting president has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. This is truly a remarkable place. The perspective that I have gained only increases my appreciation for the incredible living-learning experiences that happen at Millsaps on a daily basis.
I have seen firsthand the unwavering commitment to academic excellence, fostered by a superb, nationally-recognized faculty intent on bringing out the best in each student. I have experienced the joy of interacting with a bright and talented student body that abounds with leadership potential. And, I have been afforded the privilege to work with staff members across campus who are unified in their dedication to the mission of this great college.
As I step down from the role of acting president and return to being the dean of The Else School of Management, I would like to share some personal thoughts and feelings with you.
Academic excellence is the hallmark of Millsaps College, and it always will be. I was pleased to hear Dr. Robert Pearigen reinforce this in his remarks during his opening press conference this spring. Our goal is to boost the reputation and respect that accompanies a Millsaps College degree.
In addition to our pursuit of academic excellence, financial management is critical to our future success. We are taking strides toward raising our class profile while maintaining net revenue that allows us to operate effectively. The 2010 freshman class may be smaller than in recent years; however, it is filled with academically talented students with leadership potential who will achieve extraordinary success both on and off campus. This has been accomplished with more judicious use of our scholarship resources.
Dr. Pearigen will become the 11th president of Millsaps College on July 1. His inauguration will be Thursday, October 7, in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend. We look forward to great participation from the Millsaps community. Millsaps is fortunate to have such a distinguished scholar and leader serving as our president, and I look forward to working with and supporting him. Millsaps will prosper under his leadership and will continue to honor the dreams of our founder, Major Reuben Webster Millsaps. I know he would be proud of our first 120 years and would say that the future of the College holds even greater promise.
It has been an honor for me to serve Millsaps College. I look forward with great anticipation to the promise that the future holds for this distinctive and life-changing place.
With warm regards,
Howard McMillan
