Registration
Summer Registration for First Year Students
All incoming students will meet with a summer academic adviser during on-campus registration day. Before this meeting it would be helpful for students to review all of the information provided, so that they may have a general idea of what courses are available and relevant to the student's academic interests.
When students arrive on campus in the fall, a new academic adviser will be assigned. If entering as a freshman, the academic adviser will be a professor in one of the courses the student is taking. Typically, this adviser will remain the student's assigned adviser until a major is declared. Upon declaration of a major, the student will be assigned an adviser in that department.
Registration for Transfer Students
If entering as a transfer or Gateway student, the adviser will be Janet Langley, Director of Academic Support Services. Students transferring from another institution should make an appointment with Ms. Langley, who will consult with the Office of Records to determine which courses the student needs to take in order to fulfill Core requirements, and with the department of the student's intended major to determine major and degree requirements.
Janet Langley can be reached at 601-974-1134 or langljr@millsaps.edu.
Preparing for Registration
About a week or so before registration period, you should pick up a copy of the Course Schedule for the upcoming semester and a blank course schedule card from the table outside the Office of Records (AC 142). As you look through the course schedule to see what will be offered, think about the following:
- What courses do you need to take to fulfill the College's Core requirements?
- If you have not declared a major, what major(s) are you considering, and what courses does each require? If you have declared a major, what courses do you need to take to meet those requirements? Requirements for each major are listed under the appropriate department in the College Catalog.
- What degree do you want, bachelor of arts (B.A.), bachelor of science (B.S.), or bachelor of business administration (B.B.A.)? Degree requirements are also listed in the Catalog.
- What do you want to do after you graduate, and what courses do you need to take in order to make that happen?
Select courses that you think are appropriate to your needs and goals. Check the catalog to make sure you have taken any prerequisites for the courses you select. Look up the necessary information, and try to develop a tentative schedule for yourself. If possible, try to plan ahead several semesters, to get an idea of the "shape" of the rest of your college years.
The week before you need to turn your registration card in to the records office, make an appointment with your adviser. Bring the course schedule and your own plan to the meeting. Talk through your plan with your adviser to be sure it is workable, and that you haven't overlooked anything. Make this meeting an opportunity to discuss your progress toward your degree and life goals. Be sure to listen to what your adviser says – there may be things you haven't thought about that he or she can help you with!
Your adviser must sign your registration card before you can take it to the Office of Records to register.
Note: If you are planning to take courses in summer school, you should have your adviser sign your summer school registration card during the April preregistration period, even though you won't turn it in until later.
