In May 2010, Millsaps College professor of history Dr. Bob McElvaine led a trip for Millsaps students through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, studying the American War in Vietnam and Vietnamese and Cambodian culture through literature, film, and - most important - traveling to the places where it happened.
Vietnam is rapidly becoming a desired destination for American tourists. This trip included visits to places few American tourists ever see, including Hanoi, the wonderful scenery of Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam, the village of My Lai, Ankgor Wat and the Phnom Kulen Mountains in Cambodia, and more.
Dr. McElvaine will take Millsaps students on a similar trip in spring 2011, and plans to make the course and trip an annual Millsaps offering. He will lead a similar trip to Indochina for Millsaps alums and friends in January 2011. Information on that trip is available here.
Dr. McElvaine kept a journal during the trip, recording the sights, sounds, words of students and locals, and reflections on the war and its impact. Click the links below to learn more about this culturally rich, resilient and fascinating region and see photos from the journey.
