Scholarships are available to talented students who can make significant contributions to the musical arts at Millsaps College. AUDITION APPLICATION

Arts Scholars Audition Information and Application

  • Vocalists should prepare three (3) songs of contrasting styles from memory. Art songs are recommended. If possible, present at least one song in a language other than English. An accompanist will be provided. Please send sheet music prior to audition.
  • Pianists/Organists should present a 10-minute program consisting of solo works from at least two contrasting style periods (e.g. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary) from memory (pianists only). One selection should be either Baroque or Contemporary.
  • Wind and Guitar Instrumentalists should prepare two pieces:  an etude and one other contrasting solo concert piece of their choice. The etude and contrasting piece should be from different style periods (e.g. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary). Total time of program should not exceed ten minutes.  If the pieces to be presented include an accompaniment, then we require that you perform the selection with an accompanist. An accompanist will be available upon request.
  • String Instrumentalists should prepare two pieces: one movement from a standard concerto plus an etude of your choice, which represents your latest technical capability.  We request that you also prepare two three-octave scales in the keys of your choice. The two contrasting pieces should be from different style periods (e.g. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary).  Total time of program should not exceed ten minutes.  If the pieces to be presented include an accompaniment, then we require that you perform the selection with an accompanist. An accompanist will be available upon request.

 

Music Artistic Merit Scholarships
This audition based scholarship recognizes students who excel in the music field, through voice, piano, organ, or another instrument and have high potential for making a significant contribution to music at Millsaps. Minimum requirements for continuing the scholarships are 1) participation each semester in Singers or other major performance ensemble and 2) a major in music, or a minor in music, or a concentration in music performance. An on campus audition is required of all applicants. Interested students are strongly encouraged to apply for admission by the Early Action Deadline of December 1. Music Ensemble Scholarships
This scholarship is for students who would like to participate in music while at Millsaps, but do not plan on majoring in music. An on campus audition is required of all applicants. Interested students should apply for admissions by the Early Action Deadline of December 1. Renewal is contingent upon continual membership in Singers or other major performance ensemble. Candidates should visit Arts Scholars Day to obtain specific requirements for the audition.

Jonathan Sweat Music Scholarships - $2,000 to $4,000 renewable*
These scholarships are for students who commit to a major in music. Named for emeritus professor Dr. Jonathan Sweat, these scholarships recognize students who demonstrate extraordinary potential to excel in music performance. Renewal is contingent upon a successful student record of quality performance at Millsaps College. Requires audition on Arts Scholars Day.

Sweat Summer Studies Scholarships
These scholarships (up to $2,000) allow selected students to pursue music performance during the summer at internationally/nationally recognized camps and institutes. Students are selected by audition in January. Priority goes to sophomores and juniors.

Sweat Fellows
These Sweat Fellow Programs aard an annual $2,000 stipend to upper class majors who are performance concentrators. The purpose is to create more practice time for upper class performance majors by releasing them from college jobs, work studies, or part time work in the community.

*Note: Renewable scholarships are contingent on meeting specific eligibility criteria provided with the award. The awards are renewable for three years, to a maximum total of four years of full-time enrollment at Millsaps College.
