Information Technology Services

Millsaps College ITS is pleased to offer training courses on various topics for faculty and staff - free of charge!

Staff are available to teach training classes on a per-request basis. Classes can be open with the campus invited, or closed for specific individuals or departments. We are happy to offer one-to-one and project-specific training as needed by staff members.

Topics available vary, and include:

  • Microsoft Office 2007 - General and specific courses on the entire Office suite. Specific courses include data analysis in Excel, mail merges in Word, inserting videos into PowerPoint, and database construction in Access.
  • Social Media - Training on how to use social media for your department or class. This can include information on Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, and other social media sites as desired.
  • Classroom Equipment - Learn how to use equipment in specific classrooms, including AC 215 and smartboard-equipped rooms.
  • Spyware and Other Dangers - Get informed on the latest internet scams and how to protect yourself. Includes training on how to recognize phishing emails and avoid nefarious websites.
  • And more! - With a large skill base, our staff are equipped to teach classes on everything from using YouTube in class and how to collaborate using Dropbox.

2/21 3:00 - 4:00 pm SHH 164 PowerPoint - Advanced This higher-level class in PowerPoint is for more familiar uses. It focuses on slide transitions, animations, advanced options, and presenter tools.
2/23 2:00 - 2:30 pm SHH 164 Adding Video to Presentations Learn how to import videos into your presentations to get that extra level of cool!
2/23 2:30 - 3:00 pm SHH 164 Tips and Tricks Explore some neat, underused features in the PowerPoint program, as well as have a chance to ask your own pressing questions or get help with your projects.
3/5  ---  --- Access Week! By great demand, it's time to focus on Microsoft Access for a week-long look at this advanced program.
3/6 2:00 - 4:00 pm SHH 164 Access - Part One The first part of a two-part Access class, intended for new users, focuses on definitions, database design, and how to create a table.
3/8 2:00 - 4:00 pm SHH 164 Access - Part Two The second part of a two-part Access class, intended for new users, focuses on creating queries, forms, and reports.
3/19  ---  --- Social Media Week! For this week we turn our attention to social media -- YouTube, Twitter, and blogging! Learn the difference between a retweet and a reblog, a like and a favorite, and all those other things.
3/20  2:00 - 2:30 pm SHH 164 Twitter A look at the social media giant that keeps it tiny - Twitter. Learn how to use the service and the basic terminology of its users.
3/20 2:30 - 3:00 pm SHH 164 YouTube Explore the social media guru YouTube -- learn how to find some funny cat videos, share them with your friends, and upload your own!
3/22 2:00 - 2:30 pm SHH 164 Blogging Learn about the various blogging services available these days, including services like Blogger, Blogspot, LiveJournal, and Tumblr.
4/9  ---  --- Excel Week! Enjoy a week-long exploration of Microsoft Excel, including several classes on how to use the program, and how to make use of some specific functionality within Excel.
4/10  2:00 - 3:00 pm SHH 164 Excel - Beginner This beginning-level course focuses on general Excel functionality, including how to input, format, and sort data, as well as how to use some of the basic features within Excel.
4/10 3:00 - 4:00 pm SHH 164 Excel - Advanced This advanced-level course focuses on some of the more advanced functions of Excel, including statistical packs, Pivot Tables, and other features.
 4/12 2:00 - 2:30 pm SHH 164 Excel Statistics Learn how to make Excel do all your math for you! We will cover functions and formulas, some basic statistical packs, and charts and graphs.
 4/12 2:30 - 3:00 pm SHH 164 Creating a Gradebook While Course Connect offers a plethora of wonderful features for professors, some may prefer using an Excel gradebook. In this class, we'll create one from scratch!
4/12 3:00 - 3:30 pm SHH 164 Tips and Tricks Explore some neat, underused features in the Excel program, as well as have a chance to ask your own pressing questions or get help with your projects.
4/23  ---  --- Word Week! Enjoy a week-long exploration of Microsoft Word, the most basic program in the Office Suite. Learn some tricks to the program, as well as perfect your skill with flyers and mail merge!
4/24 2:00 - 3:00 pm SHH 164 Word - Beginner This beginning-level course focuses on generally Word functionality, including how to format text, insert tables, insert media, and adjust various settings.
4/24 3:00 - 4:00 pm SHH 164 Word - Advanced This advanced-level course focuses on some specific, often underused features in Word for more adept users, such as footnotes and references, sections, and other specific formatting.
 4/26 2:00 - 2:30 pm SHH 164 Mail Merge Learn how to do a mail merge for envelopes, letters, and even email!
 4/26  2:30 - 3:00 pm SHH 164 Flyers in Word Learn how to create nice looking flyers for your events, clubs, or anything else, using just Word!
4/26 3:00 - 3:30 pm SHH 164 Tips and Tricks Explore some neat, underused features in the Word program, as well as have a chance to ask your own pressing questions or get help with your projects.

Please note that all of these classes have limited spaces available, so sign up sooner rather than later!
