Few undergraduate programs can match the extraordinary opportunities
Millsaps chemistry students have to engage in significant research
funded by major corporations and institutions such as NIH, or the
ready access they have to highly sophisticated facilities and equipment.
The department also boasts an enviable national reputation for its
student acceptance rates at the country's top graduate research
schools and medical professional programs.
Students intent on attending graduate
or professional schools or focused on immediate careers are equally
well-served by the department and its highly qualified faculty.
- Chemistry classes are taught in the Olin Hall of Science,
where there are instructional laboratories, student and faculty
research laboratories, multimedia classrooms, a multimedia lab
and an auditorium with a multimedia/computer facility. All classrooms
are wired for computer access.
- A $60,000 grant from Merck/American Association for the Advancement
of Science awarded for research project leading to a breakthrough
technique for identifying bacteria that cause infections.
- Millsaps was one of the first of a select group of colleges
awarded a $600,000 grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
- Current department chair received the 2002 Outstanding Contributions
to Science Award from the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, and
the 2001 Chemist of the Year Award for Mississippi from the
American Chemical Society.
