At Millsaps, computer science integrates practical
knowledge and training in the latest industry tools and techniques
with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals and theory of computer
science and the practice of computer programming. Concentrations
are offered in both computer science and computer information systems.
Students have applied their knowledge to benefit the college community,
developing, for example, the Millsaps online course catalog and
the online course schedule database.
Departmental facilities:

General access labs feature Pentium 4 computers running Windows XP.

Operating Systems in C/C++ is taught using the Redhat Fedora variant of LINUX.

High-speed Windows 2000 and XP machines are equipped with over $935,000 of client-server database development software donated by Oracle Corporation.

for the Web site of the Jackson Chapter of the American Red
Cross
- Development of a user interface for a minor-tracking
capability
- A multimode editor for synchronized multimedia
integration language (SMIL)
- Development of a program to graphically
model organizational charts, based on fundamental assumptions
about the nature of an organization
- Development of a program to improve the
process for checking residents in and out of residence hall
rooms
- Creation of a distance learning teaching
environment, making use of videoconferencing and other forms
of electronic media
- Creation of a Web-based database of musicians
and musical artists and the relationships among them
- Design of an interactive Web-based historical
timeline and a small prototype implementation done with JAVA
- Installation of Linux on one machine, including
a Web server, database server, PHP installation server, SAMBA
file services, X Windows and a GUI
- Tour scheduling software for the Millsaps

We have an excellent record of
placing those students interested in graduate studies in graduate
programs across the country. Our students who choose to enter the
workforce have chosen careers in such diverse areas as video game
programming, wireless communication, networking, and database administration,
to name just a few.
