The Financial Services Concentration
enables students to understand investment management and financial
analysis. Many of our students enter the financial services professions,
or they plan graduate school in Business Administration, Finance
or Law. The concentration is available to students seeking any degree
and with any major. The concentration allows students pursuing any
major to demonstrate to potential employers or graduate schools
particular competence in finance within the broader context of the
students degree program. Our students benefit from small class
sizes, a dedicated full-time faculty, and a curriculum that develops
important financial, economic, accounting, and communication
skills.
Interdisciplinary Program
The Financial Services Concentration
is available with any Millsaps major, particularly with the Bachelor
of Business Administration major or the BS/BA in Economics major.
The major courses in Business Administration, Accounting and Economics
include some of the Finance Concentration courses. Millsaps students
may concentrate in Finance by taking advanced courses in financial
management, portfolio management, intermediate accounting and monetary
economics. Students study in a wide array of learning environments
including interactive class sessions, team learning, case assignments,
and class presentations. The hands-on activity for Finance
Concentration students is the General Louis Wilson Fund (see the
webpage at /esom/wilfund/), a student-managed
investment fund. Students analyze potential investments using
tools such as the state-of-the-art Bloomberg research computer and
make investment recommendations to the Wilson Fund Board of investment
professionals at semi-annual meetings. In addition, Millsaps location
provides outstanding opportunities for internships and meaningful
part-time employment. Many juniors and seniors have obtained internships
with investment management firms, brokerage firms, real estate firms,
consulting firms, and government organizations. No other business
school in the state offers such an innovative program in a thriving
business setting.
Successful Graduates
Many of our Financial Services Concentration
students follow the undergraduate or MBA degrees with the Chartered
Financial Analyst (CFA) professional designation, which may be initiated
during the last year of the students undergraduate program.
Many of our courses are tailored to support the students preparation
for the CFA Exams, and many of our graduates are CFAs. Millsaps
College has a long tradition of graduating students who make significant
contributions to the financial world and to society at large.
