  Geology

Millsaps students can opt to concentrate in classical geology or environmental geology and all have the unique experience of contributing to real, often published, research during their undergraduate years. Field trips to diverse geological terrains such as the Florida Keys, the Pacific Northwest, southeastern and southcentral Alaska, the Yucatan Peninsula, the central and northern Rocky Mountains, and the greater Yellowstone area emphasize the hands-on approach. Over the last five years, 80 percent of Millsaps graduates with B.S. degrees in geology have gone on to work in resource exploration, environmental, and government research fields or enrolled in graduate or professional schools.

The opportunity Millsaps students have for in-depth, personal experiences with acknowledged expert scientists produces useful and practical skills. The guided application of these skills in field studies produces well-equipped and continually learning geo-scientists. Millsaps-sponsored projects in basic geology and environmental studies give students the unique experience of making significant contributions to real, often publishable, scientific research during the undergraduate years. Often environmental companies or government agencies with specific world needs commission our students to solve real environmental problems. Also, field trips to diverse geological terrain help emphasize the hands-on approach.
