X + Mathematics(Millsaps) = Action3
A typical semester: See the movie "Pi" (and eat
pie), attend a math club meeting with challenge problems, hear a
talk on paradoxes in probability, see the play The Proof,
and the movie Good Will Hunting (and understand Will's
equations). Take advantage of Millsaps research opportunities, like
the Mathematics Summer Research Program. Mathematical research is
often very different from what goes on in the classroom, and the
opportunity to experience how math is really done is one of Mills
aps
greatest strengths.
Recent subjects of student research:
- graph theory and the geometry of hypercubes
- computing class numbers of cyclotomic function fields modulo
p
Opportunities for directed study:
- Diophantine Analysis
- Algebraic Geometry
- Elliptic Curves
- Galois Theory
- Algebraic Number Theory
- The Geometry of Numbers
- Code Theory
- Combinatorics
- Differential Geometry
