Announcing
a NEW Millsaps Program in Ghana!

Come

Millsaps College will
offer an exciting active learning experience in Ghana in
the summer of 2006. The program will afford students the
opportunity to explore the historical legacy, life, culture,
traditions, and arts of Africa.
Central
topics include: The struggle for democracy and political
reform; Civil society and political participation; Challenges
of economic growth, restructuring, and adjustment; Ethnic
identity and national unity; Ghana's stability and security
in a difficult region.
The
course will provide students with a general orientation
to Ghanaian politics and history, linked to a series of
lectures and active learning activities. Lectures may be
presented by Ghanaian academics along with politicians,
former government officials, and NGO representatives. In
addition, there will be field trips to important sites around
the country, including the Ashanti center of Kumasi, Mole
game reserve, Aburi Botanical Gardens--Center for Research
Into Plant Medicine the Kakum ecotourism park, and coastal
forts associated with the slave trade, etc.

Course Offerings:
Students will receive 4 hours
of credit in Political Science:
PLSC 4600 (4 sem hrs) Special Topics in Political
Science: Ghana in Transition
In addition to the base course
(PLSC 4600), the program offers students the opportunity
to undertake independent study projects.

Cost: $3,995.00
INCLUDES: TUITION, HOUSING (in University-owned residence
halls, hostels and hotels), The acceptance deposit, Pre-departure
orientation, lectures by Ghanaian experts, some meals, entrance
fees and Field trips
DOES NOT INCLUDE: Airfare to and
from Ghana, Health Insurance, Textbooks, some meals, Passport,
Visa and inoculation fees, and Personal Expenses.
As a very rough guide, a participant in the Program will
need around $300 to $400 to pay for personal expenses (entertainment,
meals, etc.) The actual amount that you will spend depends
on your style of living, and will vary with each individual's
personal spending habits, entertainment preferences and
travel choices. The group flight will cost participants
between $1,300 and $1,500 (depending on departure/return
dates, the point of origin of any connecting flights in
the US, etc.)
