Christian Center renovations move forward
This summer work continued on the nearly 60 year old Christian center to stabilize the foundation, add storage areas and update the chapel. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.
Long home to the Millsaps Players, the new renovations to the 1950s building include two new faculty offices and the construction of a multi-purpose storage area behind the stage. The former dressing room in the northeast corner is now an open 800 square foot acting and rehearsal space and the southeast corner, formally used for storage, is now a 500 square foot dressing and make-up area, two smaller dressing rooms and a restroom with a shower.
Room 6, previously used to store furniture, will be a multi-use lab for the theatre department for sewing, drafting and small classes. Other improvements include two doors on the east wall of the theatre for easy access to new storage facility and thru-space for actors to move from one side of the stage to the other.
The Fitzhugh Memorial Chapel, used for weekly and special memorial services, was also updated and the foundation was stabilized. Once completed, the chapel will have new lights and a new floor.
Millsaps to Host Archaeology Expo
This month Millsaps will host the state’s first Mississippi Archaeology Expo: A Hands-on Family Fair on Saturday, Oct. 18 in the Bowl.
The fair, which celebrates Archaeology Month, will feature more than 20 professional archaeologists from across the state. The archaeologists will lead hands-on activities to demonstrate the vital role archaeology plays in uncovering and celebrating Mississippi’s unique cultural heritage.
A variety of free activities, for both children and adults, will be offered including interactive demonstrations of archaeological techniques, pottery design and making, rock art wall, atlatl (spear) throwing, Mississippi and Mayan artifact displays, cordage bracelet making, flintknapping (stone tool making), ground penetrating radar demonstration, and basket weaving and beading demonstrations.
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will perform tribal social dances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Organizers also encourage the public to bring their artifacts and archaeologists will help identify their origins.
The Archaeology Expo is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 18 in the Bowl at Millsaps College. In case of rain, the fair will be held in the Boyd Campbell College Center on the Millsaps campus. The event is sponsored by the Mississippi Archaeology Association, the Mississippi Humanities Council, the Mississippi Arts Commission and Millsaps College. For more information, contact Cliff Jenkins, Expo Project Chair, at 601-965-4139 ext. 115.
