A Note from Departing Alumni Association President David Loper
Dear Millsaps Alums,
As I wrap up my term as president of the Millsaps Alumni Association, I’d like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to improve and expand our alumni groups across the nation. We’ve hosted a record number of alumni gatherings in the last year (28 of them in 2008) and we look forward to many more in 2009.
Most of you have learned by now that our college president Dr. Frances Lucas announced she will be leaving Millsaps in June 2010. On behalf our alumni, I'd like to thank Dr Lucas for her nine years of service to the college and wish her the best for her final year as president of Millsaps and in her future opportunities. Maurice Hall (B.A. 1967), Chair of the Millsaps Board of Trustees has announced that a presidential search committee is being formed and our college's trustees, faculty and administration are focused on the future, united to build an even better Millsaps.
In the past few years, Millsaps has raised a record $110 million in our Legacy campaign, expanded academic programs including offerings at the Yucatan biocultural reserve, launched the Faith and Work Initiative and dominated Division III athletics. What goes on in the classrooms at Millsaps is as extraordinary as it has always been. It's a wonderful time to be part of the Millsaps family and we'd like each of you to become even more involved.
After commencement next week, Maud DeLes Gober Lancaster (B. Ed. 1984) will begin her term as the new president of our Alumni Association. Please join me in welcoming her as she assumes this role and works to engage even more alumni. And please plan to join us for Homecoming this year, the weekend of October 23.
Sincerely,
David M. Loper
B.A. 1986
Marian Wright Edelman to Speak at Millsaps Commencement Ceremony
Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund and the first African American woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, will deliver the commencement address at Millsaps College on Saturday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m.
“Marian Wright Edelman has dedicated her entire professional life to serving others. Her work as an advocate for disadvantaged Americans fits so well with Millsaps College’s commitment to graduate students who have a passion for community service and a sincere concern for the world around them,” said Millsaps College President Frances Lucas.
“We are truly honored to have Marian Wright Edelman speak to our graduates and anticipate an inspiring commencement address.”
Since she began the Children’s Defense Fund in 1973, the organization has become the nation’s strongest voice for children and families. The organization strives to ensure every child has a successful passage to adulthood by lifting children out of poverty; protecting them from abuse and neglect and ensuring their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation.

See Prague, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Passau-Linz, Melk, Vienna and Budapest as we make our way to the Danube River and follow its course across four countries. Millsaps Announces New Ad Campaign
What’s the best way to describe a great college such as Millsaps? With increasing competition among colleges for top students, Millsaps has been challenged to create a method to communicate its distinct differences in ways that help prospective students make informed choices from among numerous quality institutions.
After thorough research of external and internal audiences and months of creative and strategic thinking, a concise statement has been chosen that we feel sets Millsaps apart: “ARE YOU ONE?” Speaking directly to incoming, current and past students – the very people who define Millsaps - this statement sets us apart as an institution that knows it is not just a beautiful campus, but a thriving home to a diverse, unique group of people defining and creating their own success.
