Howard McMillan, dean of the college’s Else School of Management, will serve as the acting president of Millsaps College from mid-August until a national search is completed for the college’s next president.
Maurice Hall, chairman of the Millsaps College Board of Trustees, said Dr. Frances Lucas will use accrued sabbatical leave during the upcoming year before completing her presidency of the college in June of 2010.
“Throughout Millsaps College’s distinguished history, outstanding individuals have led us through remarkable times. It has been my pleasure to work with our tenth president, Dr. Frances Lucas, and I have personally witnessed how she has earned the love and respect of many Millsaps alumni, students and friends,” Hall said.
Millsaps College’s search for the eleventh president of the nearly 120-year-old institution is led by Millsaps trustee and alumnus Tom Fowlkes of Bristol, Virginia. A search committee composed of trustees, faculty, staff, a student representative and an alumni representative is working with the national executive search firm Witt/Keiffer. A new president is expected to be named before June of 2010.
McMillan, who since 2002 has been involved with the college’s business school as both executive-in-residence and dean, is widely recognized as a significant business leader in Jackson, in Mississippi and throughout the United States.
A native of Jackson, McMillan is a graduate of the University of Mississippi. He attended the Harvard School of Business Administration and the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. A former president of Deposit Guaranty National Bank and Deposit Guaranty Corp. in Jackson, McMillan is a former adviser in Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management area. In addition, he is a former director of the Federal Reserve Bank (Atlanta) and past president of the American Bankers Association.
McMillan is married to the former Mary Eliza Love, a native of Jackson and a direct descendent of Reuben Webster Millsaps, for whom Millsaps College is named. The McMillans have two children and four grandchildren.

A grand opening celebration for Millsaps’ three new residence halls will be held on August 27 at 4 p.m. The buildings, named John, Charles and Susanna Hall, are designed in a traditional style and have front porches, living rooms and kitchens available for students. They feature the newest trends in college living including single rooms with each student having his or her own double bed, desk, closet and individual sink. Two rooms share an adjoining bathroom.
Designed by Treanor Architects of Lawrence, Kansas, the buildings incorporated “green building” principles including the installation of water efficient fixtures, energy efficient boilers and domestic hot water heaters and energy efficient lighting. Also included in the planning were use of recycled and rapidly renewable resources for construction materials, and the use of regional materials.

Denny Bardos is the new dean of enrollment management at Millsaps College. Bardos has more than 15 years of experience in enrollment management at four private, church-affiliated institutions.
At his most recent position as the chief enrollment management officer at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia, Bardos developed a 30-month recruitment plan that resulted in double-digit increase in freshmen deposits and junior inquiries.
“We are thrilled to have Denny join our leadership team at Millsaps,” said Todd Rose, vice president for campus programs and alumni. “He has experienced success strengthening relations with feeder schools, analyzing and targeting markets for effective searches, and conveying the value of a liberal arts education in ways that increase admitted and enrolled students.”
Bardos has extensive experience in higher education admissions, including prior positions as vice president for enrollment services at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas and director of admissions at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee. He began his career in the admissions department of his alma mater, Christian Brothers University in Memphis, where he held a variety of positions.
