Millsaps College alum Dr. Timothy Alford, B.S. 1978, will carry the 2010 Olympic Torch in January as the torch passes through Calgary, Canada on its way to Vancouver for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Alford, a family physician in Kosciusko, was selected for the honor by Coca-Cola for his work at the state and national level to strengthen public education and wellness. He is president of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians. |
Millsaps College is establishing a memorial fund in memory of food service employee Alice Acy who passed away on November 17 at age 87.
Acy worked at Millsaps for over 39 years and ran the Millsaps Grill for so long that it eventually was known as "Acy’s Grill." If would like to make a donation, please contact Vernon King at kingve@millsaps.edu or 601-974-1035.
A brick will be placed in the Hauberg Garden in her memory and additional funds will be used to fund a scholarship for needy students. |
Given an opportunity to move to a research position over a decade ago, Dr. Jamie Harris, professor of geology at Millsaps College, realized his true passion is teaching. “It was a light bulb moment for me,” Harris said, “I didn’t want to leave teaching behind.”
His creative teaching methods and dedication to giving students real research experiences through field based learning are just a few of the reasons he is Mississippi’s recipient of the 2009 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Professor of the Year award. He received the award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 19, 2009.
As one of the most prestigious awards honoring undergraduate teaching, the Professors of the Year program salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country—those who excel as teachers and influence the lives and careers of their students. Harris is one of 38 state winners from around the country chosen for the honor.
