Millsaps Lawyers Club Jackson Area Alumni Event
November 11, 2010

The Millsaps Lawyers Club will host a Millsaps Happy Hour on Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., location to be announced. There will be a cash bar. All Millsaps graduates who are attorneys or currently attending law school are invited to attend. For more information, contact Mark Herbert or Ryan Beckett.

Presidential Inauguration and Homecoming Weekend

Millsaps invites alumni, students, parents, and all friends of the College to join us for the inauguration of our 11th president, Dr. Robert Wesley Pearigen, on Thursday, October 7, 2010.

The inauguration is a very special milestone in the life of Millsaps College, and will coincide with Fall Family Weekend and Homecoming. We hope that each of you have received the Schedule of Events for the inauguration and Homecoming Weekend; full schedules are provided below!

Presidential Inauguration Schedule of Events

Millsaps College CrestSpecial events include a panel discussion on the topic of the civil rights movement including Jon Meacham, author, journalist, and former Newsweek editor; former Mississippi Governor William Winter; Jerry Mitchell, investigative reporter and MacArthur Fellow; Jeanne Luckett, owner of Luckett Communications, LLC; and Dr. Leslie McLemore, former interim Mayor and activist. See the full schedule of events below for more information on all the activities planned.

"A Tradition of Excellence in Presidential Leadership" and "Documenting the Past: Images and Artifacts from Millsaps' Inaugurations"
The College Archives will host two exhibits related to the inauguration of Dr. Robert Pearigen. Exhibits will be located in the library display cases, main floor and second floor.

"A Shining Light: Millsaps in the Civil Rights Movement: A 50 Year Retrospective."
This roundtable discussion of the civil rights movement will feature Jon Meacham, author, journalist, and former Newsweek editor; former Governor William Winter; Jerry Mitchell, investigative reporter and MacArthur Fellow; Jeanne Luckett, owner of Luckett Communications LLC; and Leslie McLemore, former interim Mayor and activist.

Friday Forum & Summers Lecture by Professor Jack Sasson from Vanderbilt University: "Time and History in Ancient Israel"
Jack M. Sasson is the Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Judaic and Biblical Studies. Sasson retired from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) as its William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Religious Studies in 1991. He is the author of numerous books and articles and was the editor in chief of Scribner's awards-winning Civilizations of the Ancient Near East, a 4-volume reference set that appeared in 1995. He has lectured widely, including recently as a Visiting Professor at the Sorbonne and as a Distinguished Scholar at Ben-Gurion and Brigham Young universities.

2010 Faculty Art Exhibition / Gallery Talk 
Millsaps College faculty discuss their work which includes encaustic painting, collagraphs, mixed media, installation and video work. "Sirens and Sonnets" by Visiting Assistant Professor Colleen Keough: New works from old parts: Visual and sonic explorations of the female voice, language and identity. "Discovering the Delta Blues" by Professor of Art Sandra Murchison: An investigation into how the Mississippi Blues Trail constructs a specific past and identity rooted in music.

"Are You Here to Find an Albanian Husband?  Reflections On My Research and Travel Experiences in the Land of Eagles"
The Faith & Work Initiative welcomes back Lilly Fellow Chelsi West ('08) to speak about the insight into vocation that she has derived from her research and travel. Chelsi is in the Ph.D. program in Anthropology at the University of Texas in Austin. At Millsaps, she was the recipient of the Frank and Rachel Anne Laney Award for the graduating senior who has written the finest essay reflecting on the value of a Millsaps liberal arts education, and the Lewis and Reiff award for a graduating senior who has demonstrated a commitment to the life of the mind and the life of the spirit.
