Requirements for Art History Majors at Millsaps College

There are two options for an art history major:

1) Art History major (10 courses total: six art history courses; Aesthetics or an additional art history course; two studio courses, one in a two-dimensional and the other in a three-dimensional medium; and Senior Seminar in Art History)

2) Art History major with a concentration in Museum Studies (10 courses total: five art history courses; Museum Studies; two Museum Studies internships; Introduction to Management or Fundamentals in Marketing; Senior Seminar in Art History)

You can also choose a double major in Art History and Studio Art.

An ideal sequence for the art history major would move from Survey of Ancient and Medieval Art and the beginning studio courses to other period and topical courses in art history and aesthetics. The Junior Art History Seminar is not required but is strongly recommended. For students planning on doing graduate work in art history, either German or French is recommended. At least fifty percent of coursework for the major must be taken at Millsaps, and a grade of C- or higher is required for all courses in the major. Students may count four semester hours of work in Honors or Ford Fellowship towards the major.

For tips about writing art history papers, check out the link at the right that relates specifically to courses at Millsaps. Also take a look at some of the award-winning art history papers! More general information can be found at the useful site Writing in the Fine Arts, or in the book by Suzanne Hudson and Nancy Noonan-Morrissey, The Art of Writing about Art (Belmont, CA: Wadsworth Group, 2002), available in Elise Smith's office.

Requirements for Art History Minors: :

1) Art History minor (4 courses: four art history courses, one of which may be a Core topics course taught by art department faculty)

2) Museum Studies minor (4 courses: two art history courses, Museum Studies, and one Museum Studies internship)

Since you can only get a minor outside your major, if you’re a Studio major you could get a minor in Art History or Museum Studies (but not Digital Arts), and if you’re an Art History major you could get a minor in Studio Art or Digital Arts (but not Museum Studies).
