Requirements
for Studio Art Majors at
Millsaps College
There
are two options for the Studio Major:
1)
Studio Art major (11 courses total: Drawing I & II; Sculpture;
Painting or Printmaking; two art history courses; Advanced Studio; three
additional studio courses; Senior Seminar in Studio Art)
2) Studio Art major
with a concentration in Digital Arts (11 courses total: Drawing I
& II; Sculpture; Digital Arts I; Digital Arts II: Topics in Digital
Arts; Internship in Digital Arts; Advanced Studio in Digital Arts; one
additional studio course; two art history courses; Senior Seminar in Studio
Art with a senior project in Digital Arts)
You can also choose
a double major in Studio Art and Art History. At least fifty percent of
coursework for the major must be taken at Millsaps, and a grade of C-
or higher must be earned in all courses for the major. Students may count
work for up to four semester hours credit towards the major in honors,
Ford Fellowship, or an internship in art.
An ideal sequence
for the art major would move from Drawing I, Sculpture I, and Painting
or Printmaking I in the freshman and sophomore years, to introductory
courses in other mediums and the art history courses. Modern Art and Contemporary
Art are particularly important courses for a studio art. The student should
reach the Advanced level in the medium in which they are planning for
their Senior Project before taking the Senior Seminar. The Junior Studio
Art Seminar is not required but is strongly recommended. A Junior Review,
centered around a portfolio of work submitted to the art faculty, will
be held for each studio major early in the spring semester of the junior
year. Each student must pass the Junior Review before being eligible to
begin the Senior Project. For a checklist of items required to graduate
with a concentration in studio art, click

Studio Art Minors:
1) Studio Art minor
(4 courses: Drawing; Painting or Printmaking; Sculpture; and one other
studio course)
2) Digital Arts minor
(4 courses: Drawing, Digital Arts I; Digital Arts II [or Special Topics
in Digital Arts], and Internship in Digital Arts or another Digital Arts
course)
Since you can only
get a minor outside your major, if youre a Studio major you could
get a minor in Art History or Museum Studies (but not Digital Arts), and
if youre an Art History major you could get a minor in Studio Art
or Digital Arts (but not Museum Studies).
