JACKSON
-- On
the campus of Belhaven College at 3:30 this afternoon,
the Blazers and Majors met for about a two hour preseason
scrimmage to help prepare the two teams for the upcoming
season.
“We kept it real basic,” second year defensive secondary
coach Marcus Woodson said. “We only practiced 30
snaps on defense, so we didn’t bring out a lot
of packages. The young guys played well and the first
group looked real good.”
After a brief stretching period to open things up, the
controlled scrimmage went into inside run drills, followed
by a pass rush drill, 7 on 7 and then full contact 11
on 11.
“It was big to break that psychological barrier
of going in front of someone for the first time,” second
year offensive line coach Jack Wright said. “They’ll
have a little experience to fall back on and use for
the first game.”
Of the eight, new freshman offensive linemen, two of
them got the starting nod in the scrimmage.
The scrimmage for the Majors was the only one on schedule
right now except for a possible inter-squad scrimmage
before the Sept. 2 season opener against Mississippi
College.
The Majors reported to camp Aug. 12 and began two-a-days
Friday, after an NCAA required five day grace period.
They resume practice tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
