Lions Plate Three in the 11th to Knock Off Majors
Millsaps and Piedmont to wrap up a two-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday

February 23, 2008

JACKSON – Junior Hunter Owen delivered a game-tying, RBI-single in the bottom of the
seventh for Millsaps to knot the game at 4-4 and eventually send the game to extra innings before senior Andy House doubled to right-center in the top of the 11th for Piedmont to plate two runs en route to a 7-4 win at Twenty Field.

Millsaps (6-3) scored first, as they have done early and often this season, using an RBI-groundout from Owen to score Hunter Abrams who reached base safely on a single to right to leadoff the inning.

The next two innings went scoreless on both sides before Piedmont (6-2) took advantage
of an Aaron Williams wild pitch in the fourth to move a runner into scoring position. House
drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second a batter later on the throw, scoring from third
with two outs in the inning to tie the game at 1-1 when senior Cole Spedale singled to right-centerfield.

The Lions added a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead, taking advantage of an error in each inning to plate the go-ahead runs.

Millsaps rallied in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Piedmont lead to 4-3, using a leadoff
double from freshman Tony Malaschak and a walk to Owen to put runners on first and second with no outs.

The Majors would surrender a pair of outs off two groundouts before Malaschak scored on
a Will Hawkins RBI and Owen scored off a wild pitch from Lions starter Spencer Shelton.

Owen’s RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh knotted the game at 4-4 as the eighth and
ninth innings both went scoreless despite a strong rally from Piedmont in the top of the ninth that left three runners stranded in the inning.

A hit-by-pitch and a walk to leadoff the frame allowed runners to advance to first and second with no outs before a sac bunt from Andrew Migetz moved the runners over.

Jay Hollenbeck was relieved by Drew Maddox after forcing the only batter he faced to
groundout, while Maddox retired the final two batters in the inning off a force out to home
and a strikeout swinging.

Millsaps failed to score through its half of the ninth, 10th and 11th innings and allowed
House to double in the top of the 11th to plate the two go-ahead runs in addition to a third
run in the inning off a Justin Vorherr RBI-double.

Tom Dimitroff (3-0) was credited with the win for Piedmont after entering with two outs in
the seventh and tossing 4.1 innings of 1-hit, scoreless ball, while Maddox (0-1) was hit with the loss for Millsaps after allowing the winning runs in the 11th.

Abrams and Malaschak both picked up a pair of hits to lead the Majors offensively in addition to Owen extending his hitting streak to 12 games while Travis Hunt did the most damage on the Piedmont side, going 4-for-5 from the plate.

The two teams will wrap up a two-game set today at Twenty Field with first pitch moved up an hour to 1 p.m. Listen live on Jackson’s ESPN Radio 1240 AM.
