Ariz. -- A day after taking 3 of 4
games from conference foe Southwestern University in Georgetown,
Texas, the Millsaps Majors baseball team was rewarded with
their highest national ranking in school history, moving up
two slots to No. 11 as released by the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball
Div. III Poll.
Ranked No. 13 in the Feb. 2, 2007, preseason poll, the Majors
are off to a 19-6 start overall with a 5-3 mark in Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play.
In the regional ranks, Millsaps sits at No. 3 in the South
Region behind Emory (19-3) and Salisbury (19-3). Emory is ranked
No. 4 in the Top 30 poll with Salisbury four spots behind at
No. 8.
The Millsaps bats have been firing on all cylinders and the
pitching on the mound has been solid, as the Majors boast the
conference lead in 10 of 14 offensive statistical categories,
including plating 10.3 runs per contest. They also lead the
league in runs per game allowed at 4.82.
Through seven weeks of competition, the Majors have had two
players named SCAC Offensive Player of the Week (Hunter Owen,
Jason Hadley), as well as an honorable mention selection to
the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)
National Team of the Week located in Newberg, Ore.
Millsaps and SCAC-rival Trinity, who were declared 2006 co-champions
in the conference, face off in a crucial 4-game series at Twenty
Field in Jackson March 30-April 1. The Tigers currently lead
the SCAC West standings at 4-0 while the Majors are close behind
in second at 5-3.
All four games of the weekend set will air live on Jackson’s
ESPN Radio 1240 AM and online at www.espnradio1240.com with
host Derrel Palmer. Pregame starts 15 minutes prior to each
game.
