Boyd, Hendrix Pace Millsaps in 20-4 Triumph
Majors open 4-game series at Hendrix on Saturday

April 12, 2007

PINEVILLE, La. -- In midweek non-conference action at Billy Allgood Field on Wednesday night, the 22nd-ranked Millsaps Majors cruised to a 20-4 win on the heels of Russ Boyd's 3-run blast and four strong innings on the mound from lefty Tait Hendrix.

A seven-run first inning for Millsaps had the homestanding Louisiana College Wildcats playing catch-up the entire game, a deficit they cut to 11-4 before the Majors plated nine runs over the final two innings to break the game wide open.

A pair of RBI-doubles from Hunter Owen and Hunter Abrams jumpstarted the Majors' offensive attack and gave the visitors an early 3-0 margin before a Joe Blades RBI-single and Boyd's 3-run homerun [the first of his career] put the Majors up by a touchdown.

Millsaps [26-9, 8-4 SCAC] took advantage of six Louisiana College errors and spread out 13 more runs over the second, third, fourth and ninth frames, including a six-run eighth that brought 12 batters to the plate.

In his seventh start of the season for Millsaps on the mound, Hendrix retired eight of the first nine Wildcats he faced while scattering six hits, five strikeouts and three [earned] runs over four innings of work for the no decision.

Freshman right-hander John David Childs (pictured)
was credited with the first win of his career, tossing three innings in relief of Hendrix while scattering three hits, three strikeouts and surrendering one [earned] run.

Louisiana College [20-13, 7-5 American Southwest] emptied 26 players onto the field in the three hour contest, including nine different pitchers, as they allowed players to see much needed playing time in preparations for two crucial three-game series against ASC foes University of the Ozarks and UT-Tyler.

Millsaps will wrap up its regular season conference schedule this weekend on the road in Conway, Ark., facing off with SCAC West nemesis Hendrix College in a 4-game set.

The games were originally scheduled for Friday-Sunday, but have been moved to Saturday, Sunday and possibly Monday due to inclement weather in the Conway area. Check the Millsaps schedule page for up-to-date game times.
