SCAC Divisional Baseball Tournament Preview
Millsaps, Oglethorpe kick off Best of 3 series Friday night at 8 p.m.

April 19, 2007

JACKSON -- After claiming their first SCAC West Title since 2004 and third in seven years, the 22nd-ranked Millsaps Majors enter the first-year SCAC Divisional Playoff as the West’s No. 1 seed, facing off with the East’s No. 4 seed in Oglethorpe University.

At 31-9 overall, Millsaps is riding a season-long eight game winning-streak after eclipsing the 30-win plateau for only the fourth time in the Jim Page era. The Majors reached the milestone with a 7-1 series ending win on the road last weekend at Hendrix College – a weekend where the Majors swept all four games.

Millsaps finishes the regular season with a 12-4 conference mark, winning 10 of its final 12 games in conference play after splitting with Austin College in the opening weekend of SCAC competition in Jackson.

Millsaps as a team has posted tremendous numbers up to this point in the season, ranking in the Top 50 in Division III in eight different statistical categories, including first in doubles per game (3.13), second in runs scored per game (10.6), eighth in slugging percentage (.518) and 10th in fielding percentage (.968). They also currently lead the SCAC in 10 of 14 offensive statistical categories while ranking in the Top 3 in the remaining four.

Despite a handful of individual SCAC Player of the Week honors, NCAA career record-breaking stats and a steady spot in the ABCA Division III polls, the Majors have been a very unselfish, tight knit bunch that have remained focused on the pending task at hand.

Millsaps, just like any other team competing this weekend, enters the weekend with one common goal, winning its divisional playoff and earning a spot to play for the conference championship.

“I think it’s going to be an exciting weekend with some intense baseball,” 19th-year head coach Jim Page said. “It’s a big weekend for us and players love to play in big time games. Millington USA Stadium is a beautiful park and a great facility, and it’s a great opportunity for our student-athletes to get the chance to play there.”
