MAJORS
WIN TIGHT ONE AT BELHAVEN
The Millsaps Majors
defeated the Belhaven Blazers on Monday (3/1/04) by a 3-2 score as they
evened their Cowboy Maloney Series record at 1-1. The Maloney Series is
a competition each year among Millsaps, Belhaven, and Mississippi College.
The Majors upped their overall record to 8-2.
Belhaven took the
early lead in the 3rd inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Wyrick. It stayed
that way until the 7th when Millsaps struck for two runs, courtesy of
a Jason Hadley RBI double and a Scott Staines' sacrifice fly.
The Blazers tied it
at two in the 7th as they picked up an unearned run on the only Millsaps
error of the day. The 8th inning proved decisive as Millsaps staged a
two-out rally. Garner Wetzel reached on a single. Ben Wilson then hit
the game-winning RBI single as Wetzel raced all the way around from first
to score. There was a collision on the play at the plate, and, after ten
minutes of discussion with the umpires by both head coaches, the run was
allowed.
John Fox pitched 6
1/3 of solid baseball, allowing just one earned run. Tal Hendrix (1-0)
picked up the win by shutting the door with 2 2/3 of dominant relief work,
evidenced by four of his eight outs coming via the strikeout.
Millsaps gets back
to SCAC action this weekend as they travel to San Antonio to face undefeated
Trinity (10-0, 5-0) on Saturday (doubleheader) followed by a single game
on Sunday.
