Majors still struggle to get bats going in 13-4 loss

While the Majors (21-14, 13-7) fared much better Sunday afternoon at the plateagainst Southwestern (26-5, 13-4), the Majors were held to a meager nine hits and Millsaps pitchers gave up 16 hits in a 13-4 loss at Twenty Field.

The Pirates jumped on starter John Fox (2-4) early. Southwestern took advantage of two 2-out walks by Fox in the first inning, and plated two on a clutch two-out bases loaded single to right off the bat of catcher Will Paton. The Pirates added five more in the second, capped by a grand slam by Clint DeCuir. Fox would last four innings, throwing over 100 pitches. Fox gave up eight earned runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking six.

After the Pirates added another in the fourth on a homerun by Ross Loewe, the Majors got on the board with two unearned runs thanks to three Pirate errors. Jason Hadley hit into a bases loaded fielder's choice to pick up an RBI. Hunter Owen hit a grounder up the middle that was bobbled by the centerfielder. Hunter Abrams came around to score and the Majors trailed 8-2. Millsaps looked to continue to do some damage in the inning, but with the bases loaded and one out, Nick Crawford grounded into a 1-2-3 double play.

The Pirates answered right back in the fifth, as Paton launched an offering from reliever Tal Hendrix over the left field wall. The Pirates added on a single run in the seventh, three runs in the eighth.

The Majors scored a single runs in the fifth, on an RBI single by Sherwood Collette, and eighth, on an RBI single by pinch-hitter John Pacillo.

The Pirates were led by Paton (4-for-5; four RBIs), Loewe (3-for-4; RBI), and DeCuir (2-for-4; five RBIs). Andy Morrison (5-0) was not spectacular, but got the job done, throwing a complete game on 143 pitches. Morrison only gave up one earned run, striking out four and walking three.

After stranding 13 in Saturday's game, the Majors stranded 11 on Sunday. The bright spots on offense came from Garner Wetzel (3-for-5 with a double) and Jason Hadley (2-for-3 with an RBI). On the mound, freshman Jay Hollenback threw a hitless inning and a third.

For the week, the Majors hit just .225 from the plate with no homers.

Millsaps travels to Louisiana College on Tuesday for a doubleheader before returning home for a two-game set against Emory University on Friday and Saturday. Saturday will be Senior Day as the it is the final home game for the Millsaps seniors.
