Fox Earns First Pro Victory with Coyotes
Former Major allows two runs in seven innings of work

August 7, 2006

EDINBURG, Texas -- Sometimes a team just has your number. The San Angelo Colts' only win against Edinburg came on the 18th game of the season in a comeback victory off then closer Edwar Ramirez in what was the first loss of the season for the Coyotes. Since that June 4 loss to the Colts, the Coyotes are a perfect 5-0against San Angelo, including Wednesday’s 7-3 victory at Edinburg Stadium.

The Coyotes got on the board early, plating a run in the bottom of the first and second innings. The game would get as close as 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, when the Colts got their first run of the game on a Pendergrass sacrifice fly.

The wheels would fall off for San Angelo in the sixth, when they turned to middle reliever, Mark Goodman.  In two innings of work, Goodman surrendered five earned runs off seven Coyote hits.

Picking up his first professional victory of the season was rookie John Fox.  Fox, the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder from Evergreen, Colo., improved to 1-2 (7.11 ERA) on the season, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out eight Colts.  Fox has appeared in six games on the season –four starts –and is holding opponents to a .283 average in 25.1 innings of work.

Fox had a great career at Millsaps College, where he spent five seasons under 19th year head coach Jim Page.  “He’s everything you could ask for in an athlete,”Page said.  “He’s highly competitive, has always worked hard in the weight room and stayed focused.  He’s that guy you love in your program because the freshmen learn from that.”

Fox is a very versatile player who has a lot of promise as a pitcher.  He is a winner and a big reason why the Majors went to Regionals three of the past four seasons.

“I’m thrilled with what he (Fox) and Garner Wetzel are doing,”Page said.  “They both have a competitive fire and represent the College well on and off the field.”
