Senior centerfielder Ryan Skertich hit two
homeruns and drove in eight RBIs in the Majors (9-3, 6-2) weekend
sweep of SCAC foe Hendrix over the weekend.
The Majors won all three games easily, 12-1,
9-0, 11-1, behind shut down pitching from starters John Fox, Todd
Kindler, and Doug Garner.
Lead-off hitter Nick Crawford is setting the table for Skertich
and Garner Wetzel in the clean-up spot. Crawford, who has been hit
by a pitch five times already, is hitting at a .435 clip including
a .588 on base percentage and a team leading eight (8-8) stolen
bases. Crawford did not miss any games despite taking a pitch in
the cheek, that required stitches, against Mississippi College Feb.
15.
Wetzel has just four RBIs in 2005, while hitting .417, mostly due
to Skertich's torrid hitting in the early season. Pitchers have
been avoiding the power-hitting shortstop by walking him, a team
leading, eight times in 2005.
Skertich, who is hitting .500 on the season
and has hit safely in every game in 2005, batted 9-15 with 3 HRs
and 8 RBIs, 2 doubles, and he scored seven runs in games against
Rust College Thursday and Hendrix College over the weekend. Skertich
has 18 RBIs in eight games.
The Majors need not overlook LaGrange College
and Rhodes, who they play this week, both on the road, preparing
for a three game showdown on Twenty Field with Trinity University
March 12-13.
