Majors Defeat Mount St. Joseph - Keep Rolling in St. Louis Regional

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. — The #2 seed Millsaps Majors defeated the #6 seed College of Mount St. Joseph (Cincinnati, Ohio) Lions by a final score of 13-5 at the NCAA Central Regional Tournament hosted by Washington University for the Majors third straight victory of the regional tournament.

The win allows the Majors to advance to the championship round of the tournament. Millsaps is now the only undefeated squad in the six team field.

Mount St. Joseph registered back-to-back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first inning. The last single, a grounder to left field by senior Josh Reinhart, drove in junior Neil Gamble from second base for a 1-0 Mount St. Joseph edge.

Millsaps rallied in the next inning, scoring eight runs on five hits to break the game open and take control. After loading the bases with no outs, first basemen Luke Morrow notched an RBI single to left field to tie the game. Catcher Russ Boyd added an RBI single to set the stage for lead-off hitter and second basemen Nick Crawford.

With the bases still loaded and one out, Crawford came through with a grand slam to left field for his first home run of the season. Millsaps added two more runs, giving the Majors an 8-1 cushion heading into the top of the third inning.

Crawford’s home run was the seventh of the tournament for the Majors and the second grand slam. Five different Millsaps batters have recorded homers in the regional tournament.

Right fielder Garner Wetzel was 3 for 3 today with three runs
scored and three RBI’s. For the tournament Wetzel is batting .538 with two homeruns and 10 RBI. Wetzel’s 10 RBI’s this week bring his nation-leading season total to 86. Third basemen Hunter Abrams was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s.

Sophomore right hander Jay Hollenbeck (5-0) picked up the win today with a solid performance from the mound. Hollenbeck threw for seven innings, scattered seven hits, gave up two runs, while striking out five batters and walking none.

The Majors will play tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in the championship round against a team that has yet to be decided. Three schools remain alive at the Central Regional Tournament – Carthage, Aurora, and Mount St. Joseph all have one loss each.

Whichever team advances to the championship round later today must beat the Majors twice in order to advance to the College World Series. Of course, the Majors must only win one more game in order to advance to the College World Series themselves.
