The Millsaps Majors (21-13,
13-6 SCAC) are reeling after their 8-2 loss Saturday at the hands
of the Southwestern Pirates (25-5, 12-4) at Twenty Field. The Majors
could muster just four hits and stranded 12 runners. The Majors
have lost six of their last seven games.
All-time wins leader in SCAC history, Doug
Garner (5-2 3.74 ERA), took the loss after giving up seven runs
in seven innings of work. Pirate centerfielder Matt Odom's grand
slam in the third inning proved to be the eventual game-winner.
Pirates starter Travis Sartain (6-0 2.27 ERA) threw 5.1 innings
allowing two runs and earning the win.
The Majors were led by sophomore catcher/DH
Derrick Boland, who seemingly is the only Major currently swinging
a hot bat. Boland had a double and two singles. Pirate pitchers
hit six Majors batters on the day and walked eight more. Senior
Centerfielder Ryan Skertich had the Majors other hit, a double,
driving in two runs.
Sunday's another day and with tough non-conference
match-ups left with Louisiana College, Emory University and Mississippi
College left to play the Majors need to find the right mix and head
into Conway, AR and the SCAC tournament on good note.
The Majors take on the Pirates for the fifth
time this season at 1 p.m. Sunday at Twenty Field.
