MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Millsaps Majors were defeated on Saturday March 11 by the Rhodes College Lynx by a score of 10-8. Millsaps took an early 5 run lead in the top of the first, but were unable to produce in the late innings. The Majors eventually folded in the bottom of the eighth when Rhodes tacked on five runs.
In the top of the first Nick Crawford, Jason Hadley and Justin Carter all had consecutives singles to begin the first. With Crawford having already crossed the place, Garner Wetzel laced a triple for the Majors, gaining two RBIs in the process. Wetzel’s triple was followed by two others – one by Hunter Abrams and one by Luke Morrow. At the end of their first inning hitting spree, the Majors held a 5-0 lead over the Lynx.
Rhodes was not able to respond to the Majors until the bottom of the second inning when they scored three runs off of three hits, bringing the score to 5-3. Millsaps added a run to their lead in the fourth as Nicky Prather scored after his double and a Rhodes error. Rhodes made it a close ballgame, however, as the Lynx scored another run in the fourth and one in the fifth. At the end of the fifth inning the Majors held a 6-5 advantage.
Neither team scored again until the eighth. To begin the inning, Millsaps added a run on a Nick Crawford RBI single. Rhodes, however, was unstoppable in the bottom of the eighth, adding five runs on five hits, giving the Lynx the 10-7 lead. Millsaps was only able to add one more run in the ninth, losing the game 10-8.
Pitcher John Fox opened the game for the Majors, giving up eight hits and five runs in five innings pitched. Tal Hendrix came on in relief for Fox and gave up five hits and five runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Drew Maddox made an appearance in the bottom of the eighth. Maddox recorded the last two outs for the Majors but was saddled with the loss.
