JACKSON, Miss. — The Majors Baseball Team completed a three game sweep of the visiting Southwestern Pirates with a convincing win this afternoon at Twenty Field. The final score of today’s game was 13-2. The Majors put up 8 runs in the first inning and never looked back; the 10-run mercy rule was put into effect after the top of the 7th inning. The Majors season record is now 10-3 (5-2) – tops in the SCAC Western Division.
Tal Hendrix (1-3) earned his first win of the season today. Hendrix threw for 51/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, struck out 5 batters and walked 4. Brandon Ingram came on in relief and recorded the final 5 outs, but did not figure in the decision.
Designated hitter Derrik Boland went 1-4 at the plate and batted in 3 runs and right fielder Garner Wetzel was 2-4 today with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Game 1 on Saturday, a 7 inning affair, was dominated by Millsaps pitching. John Fox (4-0) gave up 5 hits during his 6 innings of work. After giving up back-to-back homeruns in a shaky 2nd inning, Fox settled down and pitched 4 shutout innings. Fox recorded 11 strikeouts on the day. The Majors offensive fireworks came as a team effort with 13 total hits and 8 stolen bases. The Majors 3,4,5,6 hitters – Carter, Wetzel, Boland, Abrams, respectively, - accounted for 8 runs batted in.
In the second game (9 innings), the Majors had a big third inning, putting up 5 runs on 5 hits. The Majors were unable to put up more runs until the 8th inning. The 2 runs that came in the 8th tied and then proved to be the winning run for the Majors. The win was awarded to Drew Maddox (1-0), who came on in relief for Todd Kindler.
