Five Millsaps Majors
baseball players finished nationally ranked in various statistical
categories among the NCAA's top baseball players in 2005.
Sophomore second baseman
Nick Crawford, sophomore leftfielder Jason Hadley, junior pitcher
Todd Kindler, senior centerfielder Ryan Skertich, and junior Garner
Wetzel all finished in the top 30 in their respective categories.
In most categories the
NCAA only ranks the top 30, so placing five different players in
five rankings categories is quite an acheivement for head coach
Jim Page who was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)
Coach of the Year for a record sixth time after winning his seventh
SCAC regular season championship.
Crawford, tied for 4th
nationally with 18 hit-by-pitches and finished tied for 8th in HBP
per game. Crawford's 18 HBP's led the SCAC. Crawford missed four
weeks of the season after being hit by a pitch in the mouth, being
cleated by a runner sliding into second base and he broke a bone
in his leg in mid-season on a HBP.
Hadley, hitting in the
second spot in the order in front of sluggers Skertich and Wetzel,
placed 28th nationally in runs scored with 56 runs in 46 games (1.30
per game). Hadley also finished 2nd in the SCAC in runs scored.
Hadley was also the only Major to be named to the All-Regional team
in which the Majors went 0-2.
Kindler, led the SCAC
in wins with an 8-1 record and finished 25th in the country in total
wins. A winning percetage of 89 percent led the SCAC. Kindler threw
74 innings in 15 games for the Majors in 2005.
Skertich, an All-South
Region player, set a school record with 60 RBIs in a season, breaking
Walker Thrash's record of 55 set in 2001. Skertich placed tied for
10th in total RBIs and 15th with 1.34 RBIs per game. An All-Conference
First Team member, an All tournament team member, and a three-year
starter playing in 133 straight games, Skertich will go down as
one of the best to ever wear the Purple and White.
Wetzel, a 10th round
draft choice of the Colorado Rockies, slugged his way into the record
books by leading the SCAC with 12 homeruns, a number that placed
him 5th nationally. Wetzel's .773 slugging percentage was good for
12th nationally and his 22 walks was 22nd in the country among DIII
players. Wetzel, the SCAC Player of the Year, led the SCAC in homeruns
and slugging percentage, but finished second in walks. Wetzel also
was named to the All-South Region Team for the first time.
