Trinity Earns a Split with Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps Majors split a two game series with  SCAC Western Division opponent Trinity University at Twenty Field this weekend. Millsaps improves to 20-8, 11-4, still holding a one game lead over Trinity in SCAC Western Division race. After Sunday’s win Trinity improves to 22-8, 10-4.

On Saturday, the Majors defeated the Tigers by a final score of 21-7. The win was awarded to senior right hander Todd Kindler (5-1). Kindler threw for 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits. Kindler recorded one walk on the day with three strikeouts. In a relief appearance Drew Maddox earned a save (2). Maddox pitched for 3 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 2 hits. Maddox also struck out 3. Drew Bignall received the loss for Trinity.

Left fielder Jason Hadley began the Majors offensive attack with a two run homer in the bottom of the first inning. This was Hadley’s first homerun of the season. Hadley finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 RBI’s. Shortstop Justin Carter was 3 for 4 with 2 runs batted in. Trinity’s center fielder, Nick Vera, hit two homeruns on the day. Vera finished 3 for 4 at the plate with 3 RBI’s.

The series finale on Sunday saw the Millsaps Majors fall to the Tigers by a final score of 8-4. The Majors had several base runners, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. The Majors stranded nine runners for the game.

Tal Hendrix (3-5) earned the loss for the Majors today. Hendrix pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief but allowed six runs on five hits. Brad Mizerany pithed 2 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, surrendering only 2 hits and striking out three batters. Chuck Higgins earns the win for Trinity. Higgins threw 6 1/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on six hits. Huggins also walked seven batters and struck out 5.

The offense for the Majors today came all at once. In the bottom of the third inning first basemen Luke Morrow hit a grand slam – his third homer of the year. For Trinity, shortstop Ryan Cavan was 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and a home run.

The Majors next game will be on Tuesday, April 4 against Belhaven College at 6:30 at Smith-Wills Stadium in a Maloney Trophy Series game.
