SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Millsaps Majors defeated the Trinity Tigers by a final score of 18-10 earlier today in the final round of the SCAC Tournament. Because of the double elimination format of the tournament, Millsaps and Trinity will play one more time today. This will be the eighth meeting of the two teams in 2006. Millsaps has beaten Trinity in four of the previous seven meetings.
The Majors jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning off of a two run homer from designated hitter Derrik Boland. This was Boland’s second homer of the season. Boland finished the game 3 for 3 at the plate with 5 RBI’s.
Millsaps was able to hold their early lead behind the arm of senior right hander John Fox. Fox was pitching on three days rest and threw four innings, gave up two earned runs on three hits and struck out seven batters.
The Majors carried a 9-6 lead into the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore third basemen Hunter Abrams was on the mound to pitch in relief gave up a three run homer as Trinity took a 10-9 lead. Abrams stayed on to retire the side.
The Majors answered the Tigers in the bottom by scoring nine runs to take an 18-10 lead. Millsaps put up nine runs on six hits to put the game out of reach. Abrams remained in the game to pitch and staved off the Trinity attack in the top of the ninth. In his first pitching appearance of the year, Abrams picks up the win.
The second game of the day was scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
