Majors Edge Wildcats in their Tournament Opener, 63-61
Millsaps improves to 2-0 on the early season, will face Rust at 3 p.m. Saturday

November 23, 2007

JACKSON – Senior forward Rodney Rogan posted his second-straight double-double to open the season (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Millsaps capitalized off 30 points in the paint to edge past Louisiana College in Game 2 of the Millsaps Turkey Shoot-out, 63-61.

Rogan (17), Chris Sanders (15) and Edrick Montgomery (12) all scored in double figures for the Majors while the duo of Josh Johnson and Morey Skluzacek each netted 16 for the visiting Wildcats. Cody Wyatt also grabbed 12 boards for LC to lead all players.

In almost identical fashion as the opening game of the tournament, the two teams were deadlocked at halftime 34-34 after each knocked down five 3-point baskets.

The ‘Cats shot 52 percent from the floor, led by junior Mitch Talley who went 3-for-4 and scored all eight of his points in the first half. Millsaps shot just under 38 percent while launching 10 more shots than LC, led by Rogan who netted nine of his game and team-high 17 points in the first.

LC took its largest lead of the game at the 7:18 mark in the half (24-14) off a 3-pointer from Talley before the Majors put together a 20-10 run to end the half, capped off by junior Chad Songy’s basket just before the halftime buzzer sounded.

Johnson and Skluzacek combined for 22 of LC’s 27 points in the second period on 6-of-12 aim, but it was Montgomery’s lay-up with 5:35 remaining and ferocious dunk two possessions later that put the Majors up for good at 60-54. The Pearl, Miss., senior stripped the ball from the LC defender and carried it the length of the floor for the score.

Senior Allen Odum hit the front end of a 1-and-1 with 11 seconds remaining to make the final margin 63-61 and give Millsaps its second consecutive victory to open the year.

To close out the tournament on Saturday, Louisiana College will play Huntingdon College in the 1 p.m. game while tournament-host Millsaps will take on Rust College at 3 p.m.
