HAMMOND, La. – Kevyn Green scored 11 of his game-high
19 points in the second half as Southeastern Louisiana pulled away from
a 40-35 halftime lead with a 19-0 run and defeated visiting Millsaps
College, 73-55, on Sunday afternoon at the University Center.
Warrell Span and Patrick Sullivan added 12 points apiece for Division
I Southeastern (4-1), which held Millsaps (3-1) scoreless for the first
7:32 of the second half and held the Majors to 24 percent
shooting in the final 20 minutes and a season-low 31 percent for the
game.
Millsaps never led in falling for the 10th time in as many meetings against
SELU, staying within six points the entire first period on
the heels of 6-of-11 shooting from beyond the
arc and 10 points from Songy.
The Lions, however, shot 58 percent in the first on 15-of-26 aim to hold
a five-point halftime lead, backed by 10 points from Span who was a perfect
5-for-5 from the field.
A dunk by Sullivan, who finished 5-for-6 from the floor and grabbed a
game-high nine rebounds, started SELU's decisive run in the second half
that was coupled with the Majors misfiring on their first 10 shots
from the floor with four turnovers.
Green's 3-pointer off a Sullivan assist with 12:51 remaining – one
of three over that stretch – put the Lions ahead
59-35, capping off a 19-0 run to start
the
period.
Millsaps never got closer than 17 the rest of the way, hitting just
8-of-33 shots in the second (2-of-12 from beyond the arc), led by Songy
and senior guard Deonte Oscar who netted five points apiece.
The Majors will continue a stretch of four consecutive road games Saturday,
Dec. 1, traveling to Conway, Ark., for a matchup with SCAC foe Hendrix
Colllege.
