Millsaps Splits a Pair in Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic
Majors knock off streaking Wesley College, fall to Univ. of Dallas

November 26, 2006

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- In the Rhodes Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Rhodes College this past weekend, juniors Rodney Rogan and Edrick Montgomery combined for 37 points on 16-of-26 shooting to guide Millsaps to a 70-57 win over Wesley College, a night before falling to the University of Dallas 73-64.

Wesley College (9-2) came into Friday’s contest searching for its fourth-straight win, having knocked off a trio of Jackson-Metropolitan area schools in Belhaven, Tougaloo and Mississippi College the previous week.

Despite having four different scorers in double digits, the Warriors were unable to overcome a 4-point halftime deficit and 24 percent shooting in the second half as they dropped their first game in nearly two weeks.

Millsaps (3-1) profited from a 28-20 rebounding margin, 23 Wesley turnovers, seven steals and a combined 37 points, 14 rebounds from Rogan and Montgomery en route to a 13-point win over the Warriors.  The juniors combined for 16 of the Majors 28 field goals and were a combined 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

In the tournament closer against the University of Dallas on Saturday, the Crusaders held on to a 10-point halftime lead and shot 52 percent from the field to improve to 3-1 on the year.  Robert Nickell led the way for the Crusaders with 19 points, while Nick Netsch chipped in a game and team-high 16 rebounds.

Montgomery poured in a season-high 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting and the Majors committed a season-low eight turnovers, but it wasn’t enough as Millsaps dropped a 73-64 decision to fall to 3-2 on the year.

Allen Odum was the only other Major in double figures, adding 12 points and six rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting.

Millsaps will continue an 11-game road stretch and will open up conference play this weekend, traveling to central Texas for a pair of games against Southwestern University and Trinity.  Friday’s tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. with Sunday’s game slated for a 12 p.m. start.
