MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior guard Lorenzo
Bailey poured in a season-high 20 points, junior guard Chris
Sanders added a
season-high 19 points and senior forward Edrick
Montgomery tied a career-high
with four blocks as Millsaps outscored host Huntingdon College 52-38
in the second half for a convincing 81-71 win at Roland Arena on Saturday.
Millsaps (6-1) scored 13 fast break points and scored 17 points off
28 Huntingdon (2-5) turnovers, as they erased a four-point halftime deficit,
33-29, with 49 percent shooting in the second half. Sanders
scored 17 of his 19 on 6-of-9 aim after intermission.
The Majors led just once in the first half, 15-14, when junior
Chad Songy took a rebound from Mongomery and drove it the length
of the
floor for the jumper in the paint.
From there, the Hawks led the remainder of the half and by as many as
nine, 29-20, with 2:28 left in the period on a
Rusty Boyd layup. Huntingdon also capitalized off 14 Millsaps turnovers,
turning them into a 13-3 edge on the stat sheet.
After holding the lead midway through the second half and a majority
of the first, a pair of free throws from
Montgomery at the
9:52
mark
gave Millsaps its first lead, 47-46, since Songy's jumper in the first
at the 13:57 mark – a span of 23:41.
The two teams traded baskets the ensuing possessions until the Majors
put together a 16-4 run over a span of 3:48 to take a 77-63 lead and
put the game out of reach.
Sanders scored 11 points
during the run, as Millsaps picked up the 81-71 victory for its eighth-straight
Division III, regular-season road win dating back to last season.
Jeremy Pittman led all scorers with 22 points and 12 boards for Huntingdon,
while Chris Roberts chipped in 15 and Justin Powell added 10. In addition
to Bailey (20) and Sanders (19) in double figures for Millsaps, Deonte
Oscar had 13 points, Songy had 10 off the bench and Montgomery recorded
his second-straight double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.
Millsaps will take a week off before its next competition date, hosting
Belhaven College on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. to open a four-game
homestand for the Majors.
