PENSACOLA, Fla. -- On Friday night at the Sports Center
in front of a strong home crowd, Pensacola Christian used a 23-point
performance from Marques Goetsch to erase a 93-62 season-opening loss
and knock off the Millsaps Majors 72-63.
After starting off the 2006-07 campaign 2-0, Millsaps has now lost 4
of 6 on the road as they continue an 11-game road stretch that spans
over five states.
Pensacola Christian (4-5)
couldn’t find the back of the net in
the first half, shooting a dismal 19 percent from the floor, including
2-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Eagles did, however, shoot a perfect
9-of-9 from beyond the stripe and out rebounded the Majors 18-13.
Millsaps (4-4, 1-1 SCAC) took a 26-21 halftime lead into the locker
room on 39 percent shooting (10-of-26) and controlled the first half
in the paint, outscoring the Eagles 10-6 on the block.
The Eagles, nevertheless,
came alive in the second half and outscored Millsaps 51-37 thanks in
large part to 18 second half points from Goetsch
and 12 points from Paul Baird. Goetsch was also clutch from the free
throw line, knocking down 12-of-12 attempts to lead Pensacola Christian’s
21-for-22 performance from the stripe.
The Eagles finished the game
with a 31-28 rebounding margin, picked up 17 assists and a season-high
11 blocks – five from Micah Bowman.
Three different Majors scored in double figures, including junior Edrick
Montgomery who notched 22 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two
blocks. Montgomery continues to lead Millsaps on offense, averaging a
little under 20 points and 10 rebounds per contest.
Lorenzo Bailey (12) and Allen Odum (10) were the other Majors in double
figures, while Blake Martinez, Deonte Oscar, Rodney Rogan, Chris Ingle,
Chad Songy and Russell Booth each got in the scorebook.
The Majors will next travel to Hammond, La., to face off with Division
I foe and Southland Conference member Southeastern Louisiana (6-4). Game
time is slated for a 7:45 tip off on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
