(Ashley Wilbourn)
Friday, Jan. 20, the Millsaps Majors took the floor in the Hangar Dome for their first home contest since the beginning of the new semester. The Majors faced off against the 6-9 (2-3) DePauw Tigers, hoping to find a victory against the tough opponent.
The season has consisted of many close ballgames for Millsaps, and this game proved to be no different. Beginning in the first half, the Tigers seemed to be unstoppable, shooting 66.7 percent from the field and the three-point mark. Due to this strong shooting, DePauw took the early lead over the Majors. With 13:11 to play in the first half, DePauw held an 18-10 advantage.
As the half unfolded, the Majors found their stride. With 6:36 left in the first, Millsaps took their first lead of the game 27-26. When the buzzer sounded to close the half, the Majors and Tigers were tied at 39.
In the second half, the Tigers continued to shoot at a high percentage – 61.5 percent, but the Majors were able to match them with their own competitive level of play. By the halfway point in the half, the Majors had built their lead to an 11 point advantage. DePauw slowly fought back, however, cutting the lead to three with only 54 seconds to play. The Majors, however, were able to hold on for the 89-83 victory.
For the ballgame, Tyler Warren and Edrick Montgomery led the Majors, with 19 points a piece. The Majors next host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Sun. Jan. 22.
