The Millsaps Majors ended January in a strong fashion as they defeated
the 10-8 Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in SCAC play. The win brings the Majors
conference record to 4-4, giving them sole possession of fifth place in
the SCAC.
Millsaps jumped out to a large early lead against the Petrels,
holding a 12 point, 24-12 advantage at the 12:39 mark in the half. Their
lead continued to grow as freshman Chad Songy scored on a three
point shot
before assisting
Rodney Rogan for the lay-up. In the first half, the Majors’ largest
lead was 17 points. At the half, the score was 48-37.
In the second, the Majors continued to draw on their early lead. A three
point shot by senior Tyler Warren combined with many free throw opportunities
from Oglethorpe fouls and a technical, allowed the Majors to bring their
lead to 20 with 9:33 left to play in the contest. Oglethorpe attempted to
make a come back, but they were never able to cut the Millsaps lead to less
than 10.
Millsaps won the game 83-69.
Rodney Rogan led the Majors with 21 points in the game. The win brings
the Majors record to 10-8.
