MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Despite a season-high 22 points from sophomore Crystal Dickerson and LaReina Adams’ sixth double-double of the season, Millsaps couldn’t pull out its first conference win of the year, falling to Rhodes College 68-61 Saturday afternoon at Mallory Gymnasium.
Adams’ jumper with 15 seconds left in the first half gave Millsaps a slight 36-35 edge heading into the locker room – their only lead in the half. The Majors shot a solid 11-of-13 from beyond the stripe and 43 percent from the floor, including 11 from Dickerson, 10 from Adams and eight from Deborah Sturgis.
The second half saw five lead changes, including an 8-point Lady Lynx lead, before Crystal Jessee’s free throw at the 7:53 mark in the second half put Rhodes on top for good 49-48.
After 43 percent shooting in the first half, the Majors couldn’t find their rhythm in the second, shooting a combined 27 percent from the floor and only 60 percent from the free throw line.
Dickerson had her best game of the season by far, scoring 22 points on 6-of-7 shooting and cashing in on 9-of-11 free throws. The sophomore from Baton Rouge, La., also chipped in six boards, a season-high five assists and two steals while only turning the ball over three times.
Adams added 16 points and a game/season-high 19 rebounds for the Majors, while D. Sturgis (8), Leslie Frese (8) and Marianne Smith (7) each got in the scorebooks.
For the Lady Lynx, Ashley Farrell scored a game-high 23 points and dished out a game-high six assists, while Kristen Lytle added 11 points, 14 rebounds and Jessee chipped in with 16.
The key factors of the game were bench points and points off turnovers, as the Rhodes bench outscored the Millsaps bench 15-0 and benefited 14-7 on points off turnovers – despite a season-low 14 for the Majors.
Millsaps continues its two-game road swing on Monday, facing off with Rust College at 5 p.m. in Holly Springs. The Majors knocked off the Lady Bearcats 78-55 on Nov. 18 in Jackson.
