JACKSON -- LaReina
Adams poured in her conference-leading eighth double-double of
the year and the Majors overcame a 7-point halftime deficit and
a 25 point performance from Steffi Renninger, to top the Lady Tigers
58-55 on Sunday afternoon at the Hangar Dome.
Millsaps (3-11, 1-4 SCAC) held a slight edge early, but a 14-4
Sewanee run to close out the half gave the Lady Tigers a 37-30
lead heading into the locker room.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the first half (18-16
rebounds, 46-44 percent shooting) despite Sewanee’s hot-shooting
Renninger. The freshman guard from Darnestown, Md., put on a show
early, knocking down 8-of-12 field goals (4-of-6 3-pointers) en
route to 20 first half points.
The second half of play was a totally different story for both
teams, as the Lady Tigers struggled from the floor by only hitting
6-of-31 field goals for a dismal 19 percent and the Majors were
just as consistent in the first half as they were the second half,
shooting a solid 48 percent on 11-of-23 field goals.
For Sewanee (6-7, 2-3 SCAC), Renninger and senior guard Dani Pettay
couldn’t find their rhythm in the second half, only hitting
a combined 2-of-17 shots from the floor compared to 11-of-19 field
goals in the first half.
The Majors opened the second half on a 19-6 run, spanning over
10 minutes and capped off by a Megan Bauerle 3-pointer off the
bench.
From there, Millsaps survived a 7-2 Sewanee run and built its lead
to as many as eight before Pettay’s wide open three at the
buzzer rimmed out to conserve the 58-55 victory.
Renninger led all scorers with 25 points, while Adams chipped in
16 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year
for the Majors.
Deborah Sturgis had one of her best all around performances of
the year, pouring in 10 points and seven rebounds, with Leslie
Frese adding 10 points and a season-high five assists.
Millsaps will hit the road for its next two contests, traveling
to Austin College and Hendrix College Jan. 19-21, before returning
home for a four-game homestand Jan. 26-Feb. 4.
Friday’s contest with Centre College on Jan. 26 in the Hangar
Dome is slated for “Take A Kid to the Game Day” where
all area youth are invited to attend.
