JACKSON – Junior
Jessica Bowie recorded the first known triple-double at Millsaps
with
15 points, 11 blocks and 10 rebounds and fellow junior Crystal
Dickerson tied a career-high with 22 points but the Majors couldn't
keep pace with a strong Oglethorpe press late in the game as
they fell at home 74-67 in a hard-fought, league matchup Friday
night.
Millsaps (2-12, 0-6 SCAC) held a 28-22
halftime edge behind a large home crowd and shot a season-high
50 percent in the second half before the Stormy Petrels (13-2,
4-1 SCAC) put up 52 on the scoreboard in the period thanks in
part to 14 points from D3hoops.com preseason All-America candidate
Katie Kulavic and 11 points from Anna Findley.
In a game that featured eight ties
and four lead changes, it was a 20-6 run from OU to open the
second half that put the Majors behind the final 14:18 of regulation.
Millsaps cut the gap to within a couple points
on a number of occasions but couldn't regain the lead.
Erasing a sloppy game from both teams
in ball handling with 60 combined turnovers, OU hit 22-of-27
foul shots while the Majors connected on 21-of-23. Kulavic led
the Stormy Petrels by hitting 10-of-10 and Millsaps' Ronda
Webb went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
For the Majors, junior LaReina
Adams notched her 13th
career double-double with 14 points and 10 boards behind the
strong play of Dickerson and Bowie, while OU was led by Kulavic
with 22 points and Findley with 18 points and a game-high seven
steals.
Millsaps will close out a two-game
homestand Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Hangar Dome before
opening a two-game road swing at Centre and DePauw on Jan. 25.
