JACKSON – Millsaps
knocked down 19-of-20
free throws in the second half to offset 25 percent shooting
from the floor and junior Jessica Bowie poured in a career-high
22 points and 14 boards for her second consecutive double-double
as the Majors snapped a 15-game SCAC losing streak with a 60-55
home win over the Sewanee Lady Tigers.
Sewanee (5-10, 1-5 SCAC) jumped out
to an early 11-4 lead on 4-of-7 shooting, including five points
from standout sophomore Steffi Renninger and four from Courtney
Childress, before finishing the half hitting just 5-of-22 en
route to a 26-25 halftime lead.
Bowie dominated the first half for
Millsaps, scoring 13 of her game and career-high
22 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks, while
Sewanee's Renninger missed her final six shots of the half to
finish with just five points in the frame.
Millsaps (3-12, 1-6 SCAC) shot a solid
44 percent in the first half and held the Lady Tigers to 31 percent
shooting, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Sewanee quickly pushed its lead out
to six out of intermission, 36-30, on a 10-2 run, capped by a
3-ball from the team's leading scorer Anne Wills that forced
second-year head coach Mary Bolton to call a full timeout.
Out of the timeout, Millsaps countered
the Sewanee run with a 15-4 run of its own to hold their largest
lead of the game, 45-40, with 10:32 remaining.
The Majors' lead quickly dwindled
down to one, 51-50, with 3:49 left when Rachel Miller knocked
down a pair of free throws. Sewanee retook the lead by five
at 55-51 with 1:42 remaining in regulation after going on another
11-4 run.
Just when things looked slim for Millsaps,
junior Tiffany Whitmore hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to
cut the lead to 55-54. The following possession
after a LaReina Adams rebound, Whitmore was fouled while attempting
a three and knocked all three free throws to give the home team
a 57-55 advantage with 28 seconds left.
From there, Millsaps hung on and hit
3-of-4 free throws over the final 18 seconds to earn its first
SCAC victory in 15 games and snap a 9-game losing streak overall.
Miller led the Lady Tigers with 18
points on four 3s and teammate Courtney Childress added 11 rebounds
and 10 points for a double-double as Sewanee dropped its fifth
game overall.
The Majors will be back in action
Friday, Jan. 25, traveling to Centre to open a two-game
road swing with the Lady Colonels and reigning national champion
DePauw University. |
