DANVILLE, Ky. – Freshman
Kristy Dowdy knocked down all four
of her 3-point attempts en route to a game and career-high 14
points off the bench and junior LaReina
Adams chipped
in
a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards as Millsaps snapped
a 13-game SCAC road losing streak with a 61-56 win over Centre
College.
The win for Millsaps (4-12, 2-6 SCAC)
was its second-straight in league play after a home win over
Sewanee, 60-55, and kept the Majors with an outside shot to make
the field of eight in the SCAC Tournament in Conway, Ark., on
Feb. 29.
The Majors scored the first four points
of the ballgame to take an early lead and never trailed the remainder
of the contest. Coming off back-to-back double-doubles, junior
Jessica Bowie scored all eight of her points in the first period
on 4-of-5 shooting to give Millsaps its largest lead at the half
all year at 30-19.
Millsaps held the host Colonels to
30 percent shooting, including just 8-of-33 from 3-point range,
while shooting 47 percent on its own – the second-best
total of the year.
Centre (5-9, 2-5 SCAC) fought back
to tie the game at 56-56 with 1:40 left in regulation off an
Amanda Stovall layup before junior Crystal
Dickerson hit all
four of her free throw attempts under 38 seconds left and Adams
added a free throw with 8 seconds remaining to give the Majors
the final five points of the game.
Monica Vonderbrink and Jenny Jones
scored 12 points apiece to lead the Colonels while Lauren Clontz
added 11 off the bench. Chelsea Goodman dished out a game-high
eight dimes to offset a 1-for-13 shooting night.
Bowie fell two points and two boards
shy of her third-consecutive double-double for Millsaps. Millsaps will wrap up a two-game road
swing on Sunday, traveling to defending national-champion
DePauw University. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET. |
