JACKSON -- Millsaps
held Centre to 34 percent shooting for the game and sophomores
Crystal Dickerson and LaReina Adams both posted double-doubles,
but it was Chrystal Claunch's layup with 3.3 seconds remaining
that lifted the Colonels to a 61-59 victory at the Hangar Dome
on Friday evening.
The Majors took a 31-27 lead into intermission and held the lead
until the 13:44 mark, when Monica Vonderbrink's 3-point basket
gave Centre a 41-39 advantage.
The lead fluctuated back-and-forth the remainder of the half
and was knotted three separate times, before Claunch's basket
broke a 59-59 tie and sent the Lady Colonels out on top.
The loss for Millsaps is its third-straight overall and drops
the Majors to 1-5 in games decided by seven points or less.
A key stat in tonight's game and one that's been haunting the
Majors all season, is the lack of production off the bench. The
Centre bench proved to be the deciding factor, outscoring the
Millsaps bench 29-1 for the game.
Keonia Masterson had 11 points on 5-of-6 aim and grabbed six
rebounds in 22 minutes, while Jennifer Marees, Vonderbrink and
Jessi Asher each chipped in at least a 3-point bucket.
Millsaps was led by Dickerson's game and team-high 18 points
and 12 boards, while Adams posted her conference best 10th double-double
of the year (16 points, 13 rebounds) on 8-of-14 shooting. Leslie
Frese was the other Major in double figures with 12 points.
The Majors will be back in action on Sunday, playing host to
the 10th-ranked DePauw University Tigers. Game time is slated
for a 3 p.m. start.
