JACKSON – Junior
Elyse Clay posted her first career double-double with 18 points
and
11 rebounds and senior Mallory Morring notched a game-high 22
points to carry visiting Birmingham-Southern to
a 73-54 win over Millsaps on Sunday at the Hangar Dome.
BSC (16-4) outshot Millsaps (5-15,
2-8 SCAC) 40 to 33 percent from the floor and also hit eight
3-pointers for 42 percent as they held onto a 15-point halftime
lead to win by 19.
Usually pretty solid from the charity
stripe at just under 70 percent as a team for the season, the
Majors suffered from the absence of junior Crystal
Dickerson for the
game, hitting
14-of-24
attempts
(11-of-20 first half) for 58
percent.
The Lady Panthers jumped out to an
early 11-0 lead by hitting four of their first five shots before
Millsaps
scored eight straight of its own to make the
score 11-8 at the 15:33 mark in the opening period. A 12-2 run
for BSC stretched the lead back out to double figures and the
visitors from Birmingham never looked back.
Despite outshooting BSC 41 percent
to 34 percent in the second half, Millsaps failed to cut the
lead within single digits and fell behind by as many as 21 late
in the game before falling by a final score of 73-54.
The Lady Panthers benefited off 26
points in the paint and committed a season-low eight turnovers,
while picking up 18 assists and seven steals. Junior LaReina
Adams notched her fourth
double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds for
Millsaps, while fellow junior Jessica
Bowie added 12 boards, nine points
and three blocks to move into first in the SCAC with
42 total on the year.
Millsaps will
continue a five-game homestand on Friday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. playing
host to Colorado College and Austin College in the Hangar Dome.
