SEWANEE, Tenn. -- With
a pair of losses to conference foes Oglethorpe and Sewanee
this past weekend on the road, the Millsaps Majors have officially
been eliminated from the eighth and final playoff spot in this
year's SCAC Tournament in Memphis, Tenn.
Sophomore Crystal Dickerson had a game and team-high 21 points
off a season-high
seven field goals, but the Majors couldn’t overcome a
49-17 halftime deficit and a dismal 36 turnovers in an 87-67 loss to Oglethorpe on Friday.
Oglethorpe (17-5, 9-2 SCAC) benefited from 37 points off turnovers
and all five starters in double figures, including a team-high
17 points,
seven assists
and four steals from Katic Kulavic.
The Lady Petrels never trailed and jumped on top of the Majors
right away, starting the game on a 32-4 scoring run midway
through
the
first half.
The bright spot for Millsaps was the production off the bench
from Jamie Sclafani (11), Brittney West (6) and Megan Bauerle
(4), as the three combined for 21 points in the second half
alone. Sclafani was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field (3-for-3
from 3-point land).
Millsaps as a team shot a season-high 53 percent (20-for-38)
from the floor in the second half and outscored Oglethorpe
50-38.
After a 20-point loss to the Petrels on Friday, the Lady Majors
put together a much better team performance on Sunday despite
an
83-72 loss
at Sewanee.
The
Majors benefited from LaReina Adams’ 11th double-double
(18 points, 18 rebounds)
of the year and senior Deborah Sturgis’ game and team-high
24 points and 16
boards.
In a very physical game that had postseason implications,
the two teams combined for 50 fouls and 61
free throws. The
Lady Tigers got the better of Sunday’s officiating, visiting
the charity stripe 42 times to the Majors’ 19.
Dani Pettay led Sewanee with 24 points, six rebounds and five
steals, with Acacia Mack (18) and Steffi Renninger (13) rounding
out the other Lady Tigers in double figures.
Millsaps will play
its final game of the season this Saturday,
Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. where graduating seniors Deborah Sturgis,
Allison Sturgis and Leslie Frese will say farewell to the program.
