GEORGETOWN,
Texas – Three
different players reached double-figures in scoring for the SU
women's basketball team to push them to a 71-55 victory over
Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference foe Millsaps College on Friday (Feb. 15) night
in Georgetown.
The first half saw 11 lead changes and four tied scores as the
two teams went back and forth for much of the period. The Majors'
largest lead of the game came when from an early 4-0 lead. The
game stayed tight until Southwestern closed out the half with a
10-2 run, aided by eight points from senior Beth Thomas (Houston,
TX/Clear Lake HS) during the run. SU took a 35-28 lead in to the
intermission.
Millsaps came
out in the second half and quickly cut the lead to one with 16:50
on the clock but the Pirates kept fighting. With
the score at 41-39, the Pirates scored 15 unanswered points to
take a commanding lead with under 10 minutes to go. SU held a double-digit
lead the rest of the way.
Thomas led the Bucs with 16 points on 5-8 shooting and she was
6-6 from the charity stripe. Fellow senior Jessica Hoch (Garden
City, TX/Garden City HS) pitched in with 10 points, four rebounds,
two steals, one block and one assist.
Junior forward
Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) also scored 10, shooting
3-4 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Frosh Staley Mullins (Dallas, TX/Bishop Lynch
HS) led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks while also
adding five points.
Millsaps was led offensively by junior Tiffany
Whitmore who scored
17 points in addition to seven rebounds, five assists and three
steals and junior LaReina Adams who added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Crystal Dickerson picked up five steals against six turnovers.
Southwestern
forced the Majors into 28 turnovers but committed 26. MC held
a slight 47-42 advantage on the boards but the Pirates had
six blocks and shot 42.3 percent (22-52) as a team.
SU got
30 of its points inside the paint against a smaller Millsaps squad.
The Pirates
improved their record for the season to 11-11 and 5-7 in the
conference, while the Majors drop to 6-17 overall and 3-10 in
league action.
Millsaps will
continue a two-game swing on the road with Trinity University
on Sunday at noon while the Pirates host Hendrix College
tomorrow in the home finale at 6 p.m. |
